It is the story that has been making headlines around the world for the last few days, Ex-Harrod’s boss Mohammed Al Fayed has been accused of rape and various serious sexual offences by numerous members of his female staff.
The accusers worked for ‘the chairman’ as he was known between 1985 and 2010 and their allegations against him span the entirety of that time.
These stories are harrowing, many of the women were raped in his offices or apartments all over the world, other women had to barricade themselves into their rooms at night on business trips to prevent him from attacking them. New female employees in his office were subjected to invasive medical tests, ostensibly as a perk of the job but in actual fact to screen them for STDs so that the Harrod’s boss would be able to sexually assault assured he was not compromising his own health.
Al Fayed died last year at the age of 94, his reputation – as far as the wider world was concerned – was untainted, but these women knew the truth about the man who was lauded in his obituaries. Now, finally, they are able to speak out about the story that shaped their lives.
Tomorrow night (Friday) I will be speaking to one of his victims during a Substack Live, we will be discussing not only her own story, but the workplace for women during those decades and why so many predators have got away with these behaviours in plain sight.
We plan to speak at 8pm BST and we would love you to be part of our conversation. The content may be distressing for some, but this is an important topic and I hope that you can join us.
