According to the myth, over 2,500 years ago, Athena banished Medusa to exile on the island of Sarpedon. The goddess of wisdom and war had already cursed the young woman, swapping her long, flowing locks for snakes, and changed her from beauty to beast with a look that turned anyone who glanced at her to stone.

Medusa’s crime? She had been raped by Poseidon on Athena’s altar.
