Life has been a little hectic recently. As many of you know, I have spent the last eight weeks raising seven puppies and it hasn’t left time for much else. Those little bundles of furry joy have been a full time job, and so, forgive me for the lack of posts recently.
Five of them left over the weekend to spread joy to their new families, and I just have two boys left (if you know of anyone looking).
But when times are tough, when our attention is elsewhere, when we are stressed or our brains are scrambled, it can leave us wondering about our creative work and practice. I know it does me.
To be creative and imaginative, we need an open mind, something that is not weighed down by financial worries, that is not feeling the burden of time tapping on our shoulders. How can we create when we are so stressed?
I think the answer should – and must – always come back to play, and this is something that the puppies have reminded me in the last few weeks. It is also something that we forget as we move through childhood and into our adult life, but I believe creative play is as important for adults as it is for children.
We can still learn through play, we can still open our minds and, vitally, it is where we writers find stories.
So for tonight’s Write With Me Club (my monthly creative writing workshop for those who are new here), I am inviting you to come and play as we search for stories in a very interactive workshop.
I’m not going to tell you too much about it here, but what I am going to give you is a list of things to bring along:
• a couple of newspapers (at least two, more if you can get hold of them)
• a pair of scissors
• a notebook/paper and pen
I promise you it will be a fun hour spent together. But remember, you need to be a paid member of White Ink to join our zoom. I usually send out the zoom details at midday to paid subscribers, but as this is a fairly short post, I’ll put them here behind the paywall instead.
So, tonight (November 4th), 7pm GMT, bring your newspapers, your scissors, your pen, your paper and yourselves, and let’s have a play!
All the details you need to join are below. I look forward to seeing you there!
