I really love this, and so much of it feels true to the reasons I write. I didn't go into journalism proper like you, but worked at Time Out magazine throughout my 20s - went in straight from university as a listings checker and learned on the job. Learned all my editing and pithy review style writing skills there. And I absolutely loved it. We used to call it the velvet lined coffin because no one ever wanted to leave. But then I did leave because I knew I really wanted to write a book and I did an MA, and my writing proper career started (stuttering through having children) - but I like you always wanted to write, and I wrote from year dot. And I couldn't imagine it any other way.

It’s a blessing and a curse when we can’t imagine it any other way, isn’t it? I know we were lucky to know what we wanted to do and be and I feel sorry for kids now when they have pressure piled on them to know the same. I think life is just that little bit easier when you know for sure where you’re aiming... thank you for sharing

This is exactly it! Although I’ve only come to writing as a career in the last five years, all I want is for it to sustain me to be able to keep writing!! 🥰
