This month, the theme for our Write With Me Club was beginnings, and so I thought we could continue that theme throughout January’s posts. Yesterday I met a woman to speak about the memoir she would like to write, my first question is always: Why? Why would you like to write this book? Also, why you? That is a question any editor will want answered, and there is another, why now?
I’ll tell you more about that another day – the questions editors will want you to answer before they commission your book. Hmmm, that’s a good title for a post.
But asking this question again – why – reminded me of a post I wrote on here almost two and a half years ago, entitled Why We Write.
As I’ve had an influx of new subscribers – hi, welcome! – I thought it was worth sharing it again on this ‘throwback thursday.’ I have removed the paywall for a few days so it is accessible to all. Lots of people are intrigued by the life of a writer, and I think this tells you a little more about the highs and lows of my own career (also, I should note I have written more books since this post, so it is a little out of date).
I think you’ll find it interesting and there’s a brilliant quote in there from Dorothy Parker (pictured) which always makes me smile. And for those of you who are writing, it is a good reminder to ask yourself that question – why do you write?
I’d love to see your answers in the comments.
