An insightful blog. Really disappointing to hear this about Woman’s Hour. As you said about the first (male) caller, it beggars belief how many women think this is just another aspect of a perfectly normal healthy relationship… ‘love’ even. And what about those emotionally and physically abused women at home, seeking the strength and searching for a sign? They no doubt resided themselves to thinking they already knew there was no hope - so know there DEFINITELY isn’t now. How completely heartbreaking is that? Would be interested to know what Dr Taylor’s summary of the hour looked like.
I cannot understand how anybody thinks it is appropriate for someone to wake up with another person already inside their body. That is what Woman’s Hour were sanctioning, ‘loving’ relationship or not. I think Dr Taylor was grateful for the airtime on the topic but was a little perturbed about the way the conversation went, as you would be if you can see just how black and white the topic is.
Nothing "loving" in that relationship if a person feels they can penetrate another when that person is asleep and unable to give explicit consent.
Even if the couple have agree in advance that sex whilst one is asleep is ok, that "in advance consent" is not valid at the time sex is taking place....because they could have changed their minds. They may not feel well, they may have had a bad night and need their sleep or they may *just not want to have sex then*.
Once its happening they cannot give consent and its rape. Its mind boggling how this concept is not being accepted.
(I've been very fortunate in my life not to have this happen or any abusive relationship. I count my blessings...but I recognise its not the same for all.
Also this concept...applies to men in gay relationships. They too can be raped by a male partner and they too cannot give consent if asleep).

I mean, why anyone would WANT to have sex with someone out cold, I have no idea... 🤷🏼♀️
