Lovely thoughts about Hopper. (A big influence on my mother’s early painting). What I am struck by is how my parents contained so many versions of themselves (mostly I’m writing about my parents) and how there are also many of me writing about many of them. I can’t fix my own position any more than I can nail them down. I think it helps me write to embrace all the contradictions.
Anna, tomorrow's session couldn't be more timely. I'm working on the audio episode of my memoir due to go out on Wednesday and wanted to share this quote with you from one of the therapy sections where I express my concern about truth:
"I asked Dad about the electrical burn Gran wrote of in her diary. “No. No, that never happened,” He shook his head. “There was no burn. No hospital for you.” He told me he was the only one to go to A&E after the fire.
'So what really did happen?' I’m back in the session. 'Was there a burn or not? Whose story should I believe? Does Dad’s memory of events have the power to override mine? Gran’s? Can I have any faith on my own story anymore?'
'It’s interesting, isn’t it, that you’re concerned about your story. Your version of events. How valid it is. How your story could be taken away by somebody else – me included.' "
And the disclaimer is definitely becoming more common, isn't it? See you tomorrow evening. Can't wait for this session.
